Guest Review of Ile D’Aix – Thank you Dawn Muir!
It was an easy 1.5 hour drive past Cognac and Saintes to the small port at Fumee. We caught a ferry to the Island at about 10.30 but it’s probably worth checking departure times there and back.
It cost 15 Euros per adult with a reduced rate family ticket. No cars are allowed on the Island. The crossing is half an hour and you get to see Fort Boyard in the distance. On arrival there is a short walk to the village where there are a few tourist shops, cycle hire shops and cafes.
We hired bikes for 5 hours at 9 Euros each but there are also horse drawn carts which you can use to go around the island.. It is very beautiful with very easy cycle paths a Fort and battlements to visit.
There are also two beautiful sandy beaches. Take around the coast though as there are oyster shells lying in the sand and sea which can easily cut your feet, the smaller beach seemed safer.
We took a picnic lunch with us as there are lots of quiet places you can stop. We also tried oysters and sea snails at a local cafe. Best to arrive early and go on a sunny day and remember you have to carry everything too!
